Losing weight when your body is youthful and resilient can be challenging enough, but weight loss during menopause can take the challenge to a whole new level! Not only are you battling a naturally slower metabolism, you’ve also got hormonal hurdles to overcome if you want to avoid gaining weight or continue losing weight.
Menopause is well known for contributing to a bit of weight gain in the belly area, but it doesn’t mean that you are sentenced to being overweight for the rest of your life.
- Accept That Change is Unavoidable
First things first: be willing to accept that your body is going to change as you grow older, but this doesn’t have to be a bad thing! Rather than pining for the shape of your youth, embrace the more mature, curvy you that is emerging. “Curvy” doesn’t have to mean “fat” – you can be slim and fit, just maybe not as stick-thin as you were in your 20′s.
- Be Aware of Food Quality
One of the best things you can do to aid weight loss during menopause (or any time, really) is to be sure you are eating high-quality foods that deliver the most nutrients possible, and the least amount of chemicals, additives and sugar possible. Aim for plenty of fiber from vegetables and whole grains, lean protein for healthy muscles, and very little “junk food”. The cleaner your diet is, the more easily your body will be able to process the food and extract vital nutrients from it. This helps every system in your body function more efficiently, promoting healthy metabolism and overall good health.
- Exercise Daily
To help boost your metabolism, daily exercise is really important. Not just cardio exercise but strength training too. You may want to see if there are some over-50 fitness classes held in your area, or reach out to friends and family members who may want to form a workout club with you. If you prefer to exercise on your own, invest in a good weight machine and a treadmill or a stationary bike so you have no excuses for not working out in bad weather.
- Nourish Yourself
Besides making sure that your diet is providing excellent nourishment for your body, you may also want to be sure you are taking time to nourish your mind and spirit. The happier and more fulfilled you are, the less tempted you will be to gravitate toward unhealthy habits. Spend time doing things you love, and get out to meet new people as often as you can. Take some art classes or dance classes. Meditate, pray or spend time in beautiful nature spots to re-connect with your spiritual side. Visit museums and community gatherings to stay active and involved in things that interest you. A healthy mind and rich spiritual life absolutely play a role in creating a healthy body!
Weight loss during menopause may seem excessively challenging at times, but remember that it’s never impossible. You just have to figure out what works best for you and be committed to doing it.
